After a second major period of lockdowns began in April 2021, a large percentage of the bars and nightlife businesses in Pattaya, Phuket, and Bangkok, closed their doors for good. Thailand’s nightlife districts were ghost towns.



From Bar to the Online World

While some ladyboy bars managed to weather the storm and reopen their doors, others were less fortunate. The pandemic necessitated a pivot to new business models, and some establishments embraced the online world wholeheartedly. A number of bars began live streaming, giving those trapped far away a chance to view and feel a virtual part of the bar. Despite this, some bars notably used this time to reinvent themselves and refurbish their establishments, while a number of new bars wonders to take a punt on things returning to normal (or close enough to it). Thailand’s busiest bar town, Pattaya, was starting to see a number of new bars appear (including some ladyboy bars), and there was a general optimism growing.

As Thailand and the world move towards recovery, the ladyboy bar scene continues to adapt and evolve. It is evident that the pandemic has left an indelible mark on the industry, with online platforms and virtual experiences likely to remain an integral part of the scene even as restrictions are lifted. How much are Freelance Escorts in Phuket



When discussing how much freelance escorts in Phuket cost, it's better to break it into two sub-categories: Freelancers who use more professional escort sites and directories and freelancers who work on the streets, in freelance bars, and using dating sites. Let's call them pro freelancers and casual freelancers.

Pro Freelancers

Pro freelancers tend to know the going rates clients pay the escort agencies and will usually follow similar pricing. Many of these escorts have (or still do) work for agencies, and they will try to give a more professional approach. They will also be harder to negotiate with unless you look for a longer booking. Expect to pay anything from 2,000 to 8,000 Baht for a short time (1-2 hours) and 5,000 to 15,000 for a long-time (overnight). It's fair to say that most pro freelancers will agree to the lower end of those prices.

Casual Freelancers

With casual freelancers, you can expect lower pricing and more negotiation opportunities. These freelancers will offer prices similar to beer bar girl prices. Long-time can be as low as 1,500 baht, but you should be expecting to spend at least 2,000 baht and up to 5,000 baht.

While everyone likes a bargain and doesn't want to pay more than they need to, it's often the case that you get what you pay for. If a freelancing escort on a dark beach path is offering you a 500 baht short time, it might not be as great as it first sounds. Always use common sense and politely decline if it feels right and walk away.

How much are Bar Girl (and Agogo) escorts in Phuket?



Bargirl escorts are ladyboys/women who work in beer bars and agogos and are allowed to be bar fined. Again we need to talk about these in two categories, as the pricing for the escorts working in a beer bar will usually be different from those working in an agogo bar.

Beer bar escorts work in beer bars, usually more simple bars, often open-air and in a complex or group of similar establishments. Pricing for drinks is usually much cheaper here than in an agogo or nightclub. Beer bar escorts will often charge similar to casual freelance rates (discussed above).

Agogo escorts work in agogo bars, usually themed with stages where staff will dance on rotation. Prices for drinks are generally around 20% more expensive (although cheap draft beer offers have become common in recent years). You can also expect to pay more for the escort's time in an agogo when compared to a beer bar escort.

It's tough to give a precise cost for an agogo escort, as it can vary from place to place and girl to girl. Usually, the agogo will suggest prices to the staff but leave it up to their discretion. Some lower-end agogos may offer escort pricing similar to beer bars, whereas you can expect to pay closer to escort agency prices at high-end agogos.

It's also worth noting that you are likely to find different groups of dancers/escorts in agogo girls. There may well be a large selection of 'standard' dancers and a small group of 'premium' dancers. You can usually spot the difference based on their dress/uniform but expect to pay more (up to double) for a premium dancer.

Lady Drinks



The significant difference between taking an agency escort and a bar girl escort is that you will have to go to a bar or agogo to meet the escort. While many prefer this as it allows you to spend time to get to know the escort and talk to several escorts before you make your final choice, it also means having to stay in the bar and spend money. Some people still prefer this as it helps find good chemistry and rapport in advance, but others don't, as it means spending additional time and money.

How much extra money it costs depends on how much time you spend in the bar and how many drinks you buy. Firstly it's important to understand that when you buy a drink for a girl in a bar or agogo, it is called a lady drink and will come at a premium price. Lady drinks cost extra as this is a way a bar can maximise profit, but the escort will also earn a commission on their drinks. Lady drinks can cost as little as 20 baht extra in low-end beer bars and 3-4 times the price in higher-end agogos. It's always best to ask the price of a lady drink in advance.

When buying a lady drink, you allow the escort to spend time with you. The escort will usually stay with you for the duration it takes to finish the drink (note that this will be a shot in some agogos and only last 5 mins or less of their time).

Bar fines

You will also need to pay a bar fine when taking a girl from a bar or agogo. This compensates the bar for allowing their staff to leave work early. Even if you take a bar escort for 1 hour to a short-time room on the property, you will still usually be required to pay a bar fine.

How much are escort bar fines in Phuket?


Again, this varies quite a bit, depending on the place and even the time and day. Usually, beer bars will have a more reasonable bar fine of around 300 to 500 baht, allowing the escort to leave work for the rest of the night. In agogos, the bar fines tend to be much higher, varying from 500 baht to as much as 2,000 baht for a premium dancer (especially one that takes part in shows at the bar).

It's also worth noting that some bars and agogos will charge extra if the bar fining someone very early (say, before 7 pm) and will raise the cost of a bar fine for special days when the bar is busy (e.g. Christmas and New Years, when the bar want to keep most of their staff working to attract customers inside).

Short time hotels

Often known as short-time hotels or love hotels, these are places that offer rooms for a short period, usually around 3 hours. What to do: Fortunately, this isn’t common in Thailand. If it does happen, address it immediately and try not to let the escort into the room. Stand your ground, but remain calm and don’t get aggressive. If there is drama, call the hotel security/reception swiftly.

Photoshopping: This is a far more common Phuket, Thailand escort scam. Heavily edited escort photos aren’t unique to Thailand; this is an issue with escorts far and wide. It’s similar to the bait and switch, but instead of a different person showing up, it’s the same person, but they don’t look as good as in the photos.

What to do: It depends on how heavily the photoshopped images are. If the person looks nothing like the photos and you don’t find them attractive, it’s best to follow the advice above. If the escort seems a little different, but you still find them attractive, it’s best to overlook the issue and see how the chemistry works out.

Fake Reviews: This is something we work hard to eliminate on Smooci. Sadly, many escort sites don’t have a suitable method or system for spotting fake reviews. So, you see some glowing reports on an escort offering certain services and experiences, but when they arrive, the experience is nothing like the glowing reports and recommendations described.

What to do: This is tricky as you tend not to realise you have been misled until after booking. You also have no proof they had anything to do with the possible fake reviews. The best advice is to play it cool and mark it as a learning experience. Getting upset, angry, or refusing to pay after the booking can lead to unnecessary drama.

Stealing: It’s not common, but you hear stories of escort clients being robbed by escorts, usually having things taken from their hotel rooms. Again, this is more common in other countries and big cities, but you should always be wary of it.

Pickpocketing: Pickpocketing occasionally happens when clients cruise for freelance escorts on the streets. This usually occurs when the escorts are in darker streets, such as along the beach at night.

What to do: We advise against purposely looking for street escorts; it’s not necessary in Thailand. If you do it, make sure not to carry any unnecessary items, don’t wear any expensive jewellery and watches, and limit the money you have on you. Be wary of where your phone and wallet are at all times. If you get a bad feeling or see something suspicious, leave immediately.

Fake IDs: One Phuket, Thailand escort scam you should always be conscious of, is the fake ID scam. Every Thai person should carry their government ID card, which will usually be needed to enter bars, clubs, and hotels. However, it’s not uncommon for an escort to borrow her friend’s ID, so don’t always take it as given that the ID matches the person holding it.
What to do: This is usually done to hide the age or gender of the escort. If you have any doubts or suspicions that the escort you are with isn’t the person in the ID, or they seem younger, or possibly not even the gender they say they are, address it. Be friendly and calm, and ask them about it. If you still aren’t happy with their answer, ask for other proof or simply walk away.


Other Phuket Escort Scams



Bar and massage touts: Touting scams are when someone on the street or a taxi/tuk-tuk driver tells you about this amazing bar/massage with the hottest girls and raunchiest action you can imagine. What to do: Some bars, clubs, and shows will use touts, but it will usually be the girls/ladyboys who work there trying to draw in customers during quiet times. There’s never a real reason to follow a tout; if you can’t see the place they are talking about within view, it’s a big no. If you find someone giving you the hard sell, say no thank you, smile, and keep moving.

Joiner fees: This is a Phuket, Thailand escort scam you hear about. Joiner fees aren’t a scam in themselves; while there is an excellent selection of guest-friendly hotels in Phuket, some hotels charge a joiner fee to take a guest back to your room. However, this becomes a scam when the hotel allows you to bring a guest back for free, but a security or staff member takes advantage and tries to charge you a joiner fee.

What to do: We always advise getting the hotel guest policy before your trip (this can be done via an anonymous email). If you think you shouldn’t have to pay a joiner fee, question it, especially if it happens at an odd hour during the night shift. If they insist you pay, ask them for a receipt and tell them you will double-check with the main reception. Standing your ground will usually cause most opportunists to back down.

The Arya Boutique is just over a 10-minute walk to Patong Beach and the heart of the ladyboy bar scene (Bangla Road). It’s a bit of a trek for those out-of-shape, especially during the hottest part of the day, but very walkable for the average person.

This is one of the best budget hotels in Phuket and has more of a slight mid-range hotel feel. The rooms are very clean and modern, with some feeling more like a suite and the reception area also has a bar and pool table, perfect for a nightcap or afternoon tipple.

Guest policy: “Our rates are for two persons, so if you one person you can bring a ladyboy guest to stay with you for no charge (free).”

Mid Range Ladyboy Friendly Hotels in Phuket

Acca Patong
Beat rate: 900 Baht



Acca Patong is just a 3-minute walk to Bangla Road (it’s literally at the end of the short soi) and about a 7-8 min walk to Patong Beach. Located on Soi Sensabai, there are many bars, restaurants, and massages right on your doorstep.

I’ve stayed at the Acca a couple of times and have not been disappointed. The rooms have all the essentials, including safety boxes and complimentary bathroom supplies, and the staff are always happy to see you and help when needed. Despite being a small hotel, they also have a lift.

R Mar Resort & Spa
Best rate: 1,300 Baht



The R Mar Resort is about 6 minutes walking distance to Bangla Road and only 2-3 minutes to Patong Beach. Despite being close to the action, it’s set on a small side soi, offering lots of privacy and tranquillity.

The R Mar is an upper mid-range hotel, with spotless and comfortable rooms and excellent facilities. The large lagoon pool and bar are top-notch and a great place to spend a long afternoon and recharge your batteries. The gym is also very well equipped.

The gate on Walking Street might be best of all. There are always a bunch of ladyboys hanging around there, and they don't ask as much either. This is right in front of Phillies, so it's easy to kill two birds with one stone. Ladyboys in the bars usually want 1500 Pesos or more for sex. The street girls will take less than that. Sometimes a lot less.

There's also the online option. Both Date in Asia and Pina Love are popular online dating sites in the Philippines. But Tinder works just as well and is arguably faster. Of course in either case you have to put in work and do a lot of waiting just to arrange a meeting.

The best for a chilled night: TJs

TJs is a very laid-back ladyboy bar with a super friendly vibe. Managed by the same team that successfully ran the popular Cocktails and Dreams bar in Phuket for so long, this place still keeps up the tradition of hosting regular ladyboy shows where the staff get to lip sync, dance, and have fund with the patrons.

The only down side of TJs the location, set all the way down in Naklua soi 18. But it’s worth making the journey at least once a trip, especially if you are looking for a night away from the usually noise and chaos Pattaya serves up.

Another notable chilled ladyboy bar is Litas on Pattaya 13/4. Great location, very friendly staff, and always a pleasure to have a drink with the hostess Lita (there is also a new ladyboy bar right next door worth checking out).

The best beer bar: New bar

New bar is on the Soi Buakaow end of the Made in Thailand street. Although only a couple of years old, New Bar has already established itself as one of Pattaya’s main ladyboys bars and sits in a small beer bar complex which isn’t as crazy or overbearing as many of the neighbouring complexes.

Usually staffed with 4-6 ladyboys, in a good location, this is a bar worth hitting at any time after dark and has a fairly chilled vibe. Saddle up to the bar and introduce yourself to the friendly all-ladyboy staff, and then play a few games of pool to get to know them better. You’re guaranteed a great night.

On Soi Diamond, just off Walking Street, this sizable agogo keeps a good number of tall and attractive staff, and are open from 8 til late. It’s not the cheapest place to spend the night, and if you look and act like a newbie you’ll get hustled for drinks and overwhelmed with attention (but that’s what some guys love), but it’s a great bar to pop in for a drink or three when all the late night action migrates to this part of town.

This place can be hit or miss, but when it’s a hit it’s a big one and can draw in 50+ ladyboys on a big night, especially when a guest DJ, band, or special event is on. But when we say head here late we mean it, some times you can pop in at 2.30am and find just 3-4 ladyboys hanging by the DJ booth, and 45 mins later that number can be 30+.

After all, knowing the motivations behind your temporary bedroom friend/adversary can help you avoid some missteps, as well as providing some empathy and respect – without having to walk a mile in her high heels (which wouldn't be easy, but not for the reasons you might think).



Tolerated Yes. But Accepted? Only to a Point

Before we delve into why, let's explore a tangential aspect of bar girl life in Thailand, one that's often portrayed inaccurately in tourist guidebooks about Thailand. This pertains to bar girls and prostitution in general in Thailand and ladyboys in particular. One often hears that Thai culture is much more tolerant than those of the west – transgendered women, or ladyboys as they are called here, are an accepted part of society, and it also turns a blind eye to prostitution, being more open with regard to sexuality.

This is, to a certain extent, true. But that's not to say that Thai people don't look down their noses at both ladyboys – particularly those in the play for play game – and girls who work in bars. But unlike in the West, where prostitution is seen as much more of a moral issue, in Thailand it's a class issue.

If one is forced to work in a bar and "go with customers," to employ the local vernacular, one is of low economic means, and therefore considered by others to be of a lower class, socially. While there is no caste system here per se, there is a definite social distinction between well-to-do middle class Thai people, the elite rich, and those of little economic means, which here typically means those from rural areas. This is why so many girls who work in bars that cater to foreigners are from Isaan or other rural areas in central or northern Thailand.

This is why you'll hear many rural Thais talk about "Bangkok Thais" with a mixture of envy and disdain.



So your average middle class Thai person living and working in Bangkok may not see anything wrong with a girl or ladyboy from Nong Khai coming to work in a bar in Nana Plaza to support her family back home on the farm. After all, one is expected to take care of one's elder family here.

But that same middle class Thai person isn't going to be inviting that ladyboy to join them for afternoon tea anytime soon. Furthermore, in terms of the social strata, farmers in particular are seen as being on the bottom in Thailand. Nowhere is this more prevalent than in Thai media, where farmers and those raised on a farm are typically portrayed as ignorant and stupid – what we would call rednecks.

Ever wonder why there is such a preoccupation with white skin in Thailand and Southeast Asia in general? Because if you have dark skin that means you must be an uncouth rural denizen forced to labor in a field – most definitely not hi-so.



Sorry Cheap Charlie, I Got Mouths to Feed. Really

Which brings us to the primary reason the girls and ladyboys we love work in bars: most of them have families to support. It may seem strange to a Western foreigner, but in this deeply traditional Buddhist culture, children are expected to take care of their parents and grandparents, including financially. There is no social safety net here; a family's children are the elders' safety net.

Bear in mind too that the average farm family in Thailand makes $3,600 a year (U.S. Dollars, according to 2008 United Nations survey). Granted, the cost of living in Thailand is much less than in the West, but still, Thai farmers ain't getting rich; there's no such thing as a gentleman farmer here. In fact most are debt these days, because of the cost of fertilizer and recent natural disasters like the floods that plagued Thailand a few years back.

So ask any girl working in a bar where she's from and the odds are good it will be from rural Thailand, commonly somewhere in Isaan. Ask her why and the answer will often be two-fold. First, she's helping support her family back home. Often times the older siblings will go to work to put the younger ones through school as well – this is particularly true of ladyboys, who still have fewer prospects in the workforce, even with a degree, than a younger brother or sister.

Furthermore, for a girl from a poor rural family who can't afford her to send her to university, working in a bar in Bangkok or Pattaya -- among many friends and making more money than she could back home -- while avoiding the backbreaking work of rice farming, is an appealing alternative. Slog away day after day in the hot, muddy fields of Phitsanulok or dance in an air-conditioned go-go in Pattaya, going out partying with your friends afterwards? An easy choice for many girls.

Sure there are a few girls out there who aren't doing it because they have to support their family financially, but because they enjoy the lifestyle and the easy money. But the vast majority of them are in the former category: they are the primary breadwinners for the folks back home.

So keep that in mind the next time you get annoyed that a girl is pestering you for a lady drink or balks at your low-ball offer for a short-time price. She may literally have mouths to feed.

And when you're doing the so-called walk of shame back to your hotel? Grow some balls and turn it into the walk of fame. Take her hand and show her – and more importantly, let her show other Thais – that you aren't ashamed to be seen with her. Your lady, be she GG or ladyboy, will appreciate it – she likely comes from the bottom rung of the social ladder, after all.
